Sumayya Menezes

Sumayya Menezes (b.1984) is an art writer and visual arts educator with a keen interest in contemporary visual arts pedagogies. She completed a BA Honours (Fine Art) summe cum laude at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg in 2008, and has since administered various curatorial and educational projects within the visual arts in Durban. Since 2014, she has been involved with the KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA), playing an active role in the management, curatorship and educational vision of the organisation. She served as the gallery curator from 2022 to 2023, and co-curated exhibitions with independent curators Gabi Ngcobo and Carol Brown. She writes for exhibition catalogues and other visual art publications, including the Mail & Guardian Online. In May 2024 she was selected to participate in a Critical Art Writing workshop facilitated by Ashraf Jamal, presented by the ARAK Collection and Latitudes Online, and the article she produced was selected for publication on ArtThrob. She is currently reading for her MA (Visual Arts) at the University of Johannesburg, researching tools for visual literacy and critical thinking in the tertiary education space, supervised by Prof. Alison Kearney.
