Gcotyelwa Mashiqa

Gcotyelwa Mashiqa is the Curator of Contemporary Collections at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG). She is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape. Mashiqa completed her Master of Arts in History with specialisation in Advanced Issues in Museum and Heritage Studies and Visual History and was awarded cum laude for her MA thesis.
She curated a group exhibition titled Black Luminosity (2021) for SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, and was an assistant to Azu Nwagbogu (the founder of AAF, Lagos and former Interim/Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA), in curating an online exhibition titled Blankspace: Home as a Parish (2020) for Hangar Online: Artistic Research Centre in Portugal. Mashiqa was a curatorial fellow for the inaugural Stellenbosch Triennale 2020, co-curating From the Vault, an exhibition of South African modern art. Previously she worked at Bag Factory Artists’ Studios and Zeitz MOCAA.
